Every child wants to learn! This was the secret that was revealed to Dr Maria Montessori, an Italian physicist, as she observed the children under her care. She then began to envision a method of education where peace, positive spaces and sensory learning would enable the children to learn naturally. The Montessori method focuses not just on academics, but on the holistic development of each child. It is a highly individualised learning methodology as it is child- centric and focuses on mastery of concepts through sensorial impressions. The child therefore works with his hands and chooses ‘work’ (materials and activities) that satisfy his hunger for learning and exploration.
There are Practical life activities that help the child for carrying out their daily needs in an environment that mirrors their home. The Sensorial, Language, Arithmetic and Culture activities help the child to understand concepts in Math, Science, Geography, Biology etc. in a concrete way. The method is based on observation of the child’s needs and has gained popularity all over the world!
The Montessori method is unique as it doesn’t involve the teacher being the centre of attention in the classroom. There is no large blackboard! Rather, the classroom has children of mixed ages working independently, socialising with others to carry out their work and moving from one task to the next with little to no interference from the trained adults. This independence and self-sufficiency are remarkably achieved in a Montessori environment because of the prepared environment that is so inviting, calming and comforting to the child.
The scientifically designed materials provide fodder to the child’s curious hands and the trained teacher observes the children, keeping note of their achievements and their needs. Here is an amazing education method, that has not only stood the test of time, but also is universal in application. As the method focuses on each individual child and is based on the inherent learning nature of every child, it has found success across continents and has brought forth some of the world’s most innovative thinkers and leaders.
Homeschooling refers to the decision taken by parents to educate their children at home. It enables parents to provide their child with a stress-free environment to learn independently and allows the child time to pursue goals at their own pace. There are several methods of homeschooling, but the Montessori method provides a structure of education that equips the parent with tools to teach their child. Within this structure, there is so much room for flexibility, freedom for the child to make decisions, thus enabling them to thrive independently. Homeschooling requires the parent(s) to spend quality time planning, preparing and facilitating the education of their child.

After going through the Montessori Homeschooling course and having a look at the curriculum included, you will realize that Montessori involves a change in our thought process and conditioning and one actually does not require fancy toys and objects. The curriculum clearly explains the objective of all the activities and it is enough to keep in mind the direct and indirect aims while choosing work for your child. Montessori materials don’t require oodles of paperwork or ‘smart’ apps and toys. They involve simple, hands-on work using day-to-day objects and plain apparatus that stimulate the brain. Based on the aims of the activities, it is up to you to select the materials that will provide your child with opportunities to work on a particular skill.
